Bipolar Disorder Treatment

What is Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental health condition that causes extreme mood swings, including emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression). These mood shifts can be intense and affect an individual’s ability to function in day-to-day life. Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition, but it can be managed effectively with the right treatment and support.

There are several types of bipolar disorder:

  • Bipolar I Disorder: Characterized by severe manic episodes lasting at least seven days, or by manic symptoms so severe that immediate hospital care is necessary. Depressive episodes also occur and typically last at least two weeks.
  • Bipolar II Disorder: Defined by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania), but not the full-blown manic episodes that are typical of Bipolar I.
  • Cyclothymic Disorder: Periods of hypomanic symptoms and periods of depressive symptoms that last for at least two years (one year in children and adolescents), but the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic criteria for a full hypomanic episode or depressive episode.

What are the signs of Bipolar Disorder?
The symptoms of bipolar disorder are often classified into manic/hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms.

  • Manic/Hypomanic Symptoms:

    • Feeling unusually upbeat, euphoric, or irritable
    • Increased energy, activity, or restlessness
    • Rapid speech or jumping from one idea to another
    • Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity
    • Decreased need for sleep without feeling tired
    • Engaging in risky behaviors, such as spending sprees, unwise investments, or reckless driving
    • Racing thoughts or difficulty focusing
  • Depressive Symptoms:

    • Prolonged sadness, hopelessness, or feelings of emptiness
    • Fatigue or lack of energy, even with enough sleep
    • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
    • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
    • Significant weight changes (loss or gain)
    • Thoughts of death, suicide, or self-harm
    • Sleeping too much or too little

Bipolar disorder can often be misdiagnosed as depression, especially when the individual seeks help during a depressive episode and does not report previous manic or hypomanic episodes.

How is Bipolar Disorder diagnosed?
Diagnosing bipolar disorder requires a thorough evaluation by a mental health professional. At Angels Mental Health, we follow a structured approach to ensure an accurate diagnosis:

  1. Clinical Interview:
A detailed discussion about your symptoms, their duration, and how they affect your life. This also includes discussing any family history of mood disorders, as bipolar disorder often has a genetic component.

  2. Mood Tracking:
Keeping track of your mood patterns over time is an important step in diagnosing bipolar disorder. This may involve self-reports, mood diaries, or assessments from family members or close friends.

  3. Behavioral Assessments:
We may use standardized diagnostic tools and questionnaires to help evaluate the severity and type of symptoms you are experiencing.

  4. Medical and Psychological History:
Reviewing your medical history helps rule out other conditions that could mimic bipolar disorder symptoms, such as thyroid disorders or substance use. We also assess for co-occurring mental health conditions like anxiety or ADHD.

How is Bipolar Disorder treated?
Bipolar disorder is a chronic condition that requires long-term management. At Angels Mental Health, we provide personalized treatment plans based on your unique needs, with the following approaches commonly used:

  1. Medication Management:

    • Mood Stabilizers: Medications like lithium or valproate are often used to control the highs and lows of bipolar disorder. They help reduce the frequency and severity of manic and depressive episodes.
    • Antipsychotics: Atypical antipsychotics, such as olanzapine or quetiapine, may be prescribed, particularly if mood stabilizers alone are not effective.
    • Antidepressants: In some cases, antidepressants are used to manage depressive episodes. However, they are often combined with a mood stabilizer to prevent triggering manic episodes.
    • Anticonvulsants: Medications typically used to treat seizures, like lamotrigine or carbamazepine, may also help stabilize mood in individuals with bipolar disorder.
  2. Psychotherapy:

    • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps individuals manage bipolar disorder by identifying negative thought patterns and behaviors and replacing them with healthier ones. It can also help improve coping skills and prevent mood episodes.
    • Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT): This form of therapy focuses on stabilizing daily routines, such as sleep, meals, and social interactions, to help regulate mood.
    • Family-Focused Therapy: Involving family members in treatment can improve communication, reduce stress, and provide a stronger support system for individuals with bipolar disorder.
    • Psychoeducation: Educating individuals and their families about bipolar disorder is essential for effective treatment. Understanding the condition, recognizing early warning signs of mood episodes, and learning strategies for managing symptoms can improve long-term outcomes.
  3. Lifestyle and Support Strategies:

    • Routine Establishment: Maintaining a consistent daily routine, particularly regarding sleep and activity levels, is important for stabilizing mood.
    • Stress Management: Developing healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques, can help reduce the likelihood of mood swings.
    • Support Groups: Connecting with others who have bipolar disorder through group therapy or support groups can provide emotional support and practical advice for coping with the challenges of the condition.
  4. Telehealth and Ongoing Support:
At Angels Mental Health, we offer both in-person and telehealth services to ensure continuous care. Our team provides ongoing monitoring of your mood, adjustments to your treatment plan as necessary, and support throughout your journey with bipolar disorder.
